At first, I had doubts about the Daily mode available at wordleunlimited.dev website. With Unlimited mode which allows to play millions of rounds, why should you limit yourself to only one word a day? However, after two weeks of using the Daily mode and understanding that I and my brother were guessing the same word, I understood the meaning of this mode. There are no any limitations. It is a great opportunity to start a conversation.
Everyone Solving One Word Creates Common Point Instantly
Here lies the whole idea behind Daily mode. As editor of the site chooses one and only word in 24 hours according to the length categories, everyone who uses Daily mode is solving the same word at the same time. That means that you managed to guess it in 4 attempts and your colleague needs 6 attempts to guess the same word instantly creates some kind of comparison. While Unlimited mode allows players to guess different word and to show their skills, Daily mode lets you share the experience of guessing the same 5-letter word. The fact that everyone is guessing the same word gives some strange feeling of worldwide community since all the strangers around the world are solving the same puzzle simultaneously. This common effort is really beautiful. Any leaderboard, platform or social pressure is not needed to achieve it. It is enough to know that whatever you discuss with people, they have already guessed this word.
"How Many Attempts Did It Take You?" Become a Golden Question
Since I have been playing the Daily mode on a regular basis, I have understood that the natural course of discussion always leads to the question "so, how many attempts did it take you". This question has become a perfect shortcut to small talk with my friends and family who are using this game. Recently, my mom joined me and she sends me a message every morning with the number of her attempts to compare our scores. She sometimes beats me. Sometimes I beat her in one move only. Of course, neither of us tells the word to each other as it would ruin the game. However, this competition is really entertaining. This is what the Daily mode is good for. The solo puzzle becomes common experience without any multiplayer system needed.
Why the Waiting Period of 24 Hours Is Really Important
At first, I thought that the whole idea of "one word per day" was outdated. Why should I wait 24 hours for a new puzzle when I can play unlimited puzzles immediately? However, after regular playing of Daily mode, I have understood that it is this waiting period that makes it possible. It creates some kind of anticipation. You know that there is a new word waiting for you in 24 hours and the slight temptation of "I wonder what it would be" is the whole point of this mode. If a new Daily word would appear every hour, the whole essence would be lost. The scarcity is the whole point. On wordleunlimited.dev there is even the countdown timer telling you how much time left till the next Daily word is generated and I should admit it gives the event feeling every day.
Discussion of Attempts Without Spoiling Anything
Another interesting thing I have learned about Daily mode without even expecting it is the etiquette of Daily mode comparison. The unwritten rule says that you can discuss the results, you can talk about your reaction or regret, but you should never mention the word until you are sure that the other person is already done with his/her attempt. That way you create a peculiar ritual of discussion where hints are thrown without spoiling anything. Things like "the word was really hard" or "I was lucky in my second attempt" or "those vowels killed me". It becomes some kind of language of vague postings about the common experience. And then, when you finally confirm that you are both done, revealing the word becomes really celebratory. This kind of interaction is really uncommon for modern games and I really appreciate that the Daily mode has brought it back naturally.
The Option of Word Length Creates Another Layer
Another thing I have realized a bit later is that the Daily mode takes into account the word length option of wordleunlimited.dev. My niece who plays 3-letter Daily and my dad who plays 7-letter Daily actually play the Daily mode, but just different puzzles. So, several members of your family can have their own Daily word to guess and to compare the results of their attempts. In my family WhatsApp group there is this wonderful ecosystem where 5-letter people discuss among themselves, 4-letter people compare their scores and kids talk about their 3-letter victories. Somehow, this has made the game more inclusive among generations without ruining the idea of common experience.
No Ads, No Timers, No Pressure
One of the things that make the Daily mode of wordleunlimited.dev so different from other daily word games is complete lack of any pressure. There are no popup ads appearing between attempts, there is no premium reveal button tempting you to buy hints for real money, there is no timer stressing you out unless Time mode is enabled separately. You get the word, you guess it and that's it. The atmosphere is more like newspaper crossword. It should be slow, easy and be a part of your morning routine. Even the streak tracking is very modest so you don't feel devastated having missed a day.
Conclusion
The Daily mode on Wordle Unlimited is really the mode I have initially dismissed and now defend the hardest. The idea of single word seems to be really boring in theory, but in practice it creates amazing daily ritual which silently brings people together. Whether it is comparison of attempts with your family members, your colleagues or your friend on WhatsApp, the common word becomes the little thing that ties the game socially. Give it a real chance for a week before writing it off. You will definitely recommend it to at least one person from your surroundings within several days.
